BBQ#192 Cattle and Oink BBQ – Sherman Texas

Cackle & Oink BBQ in Sherman: A Decent BBQ Spot, But Not the Best

When you’re in Texas, barbecue is a serious business. With so many incredible options across the state, any BBQ joint has a high bar to meet. Cackle & Oink BBQ in Sherman has gained a lot of local praise, but does it truly live up to the hype? After visiting, I’d say it’s a solid 5/10—good, but not mind-blowing.

The Good Stuff

Let’s start with what Cackle & Oink does well:

1. Friendly Atmosphere

The staff is welcoming, the service is quick, and the place has a laid-back, no-frills vibe. It’s the kind of spot where you can feel comfortable whether you’re dining in or grabbing takeout.

2. Ribs & Sausage Are the Stars

If you’re going to eat here, the pork ribs and smoked sausage are the way to go. The ribs have a nice smoky flavor and fall off the bone, while the sausage has a great snap and bold seasoning. These two items definitely make the meal worthwhile.

3. Decent Sides

The jalapeño cornbread casserole is unique and tasty, and the potato salad is a solid, creamy side. Nothing over-the-top, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Where It Falls Short

Despite the positives, Cackle & Oink isn’t without its flaws. Here’s why it doesn’t quite hit top-tier BBQ status:

1. Inconsistent Brisket

Brisket is the heart and soul of Texas barbecue, and unfortunately, Cackle & Oink’s brisket just doesn’t deliver consistently. Some days it’s decent, but other times it’s dry and lacking the deep, smoky flavor that great Texas brisket should have. It’s not bad, but it’s not standout either.

2. Average Flavor Overall

While the ribs and sausage are good, the rest of the menu is just okay. The pulled pork lacks juiciness, and the chicken is forgettable. The seasoning on most meats is a bit underwhelming compared to what you’d expect from a place with such a strong reputation.

3. Not the Best Value

For the portion sizes and quality, the prices are a little high. It’s not overpriced, but when you compare it to other top BBQ spots in Texas, you might feel like you’re not quite getting your money’s worth.

Final Verdict: 5/10

Cackle & Oink BBQ is decent, but it doesn’t stand out in a state where barbecue competition is fierce. If you’re in Sherman and need a quick BBQ fix, it’s not a bad option—just don’t expect a life-changing meal. The ribs and sausage make it worth trying, but the inconsistent brisket and average flavors keep it from reaching greatness.

Would I go back? Maybe. But if I were craving truly amazing Texas barbecue, I’d probably look elsewhere.
